Mentawai (also known as Mentawei and Mentawi) people are the native people of the Mentawai Islands, West Sumatra Province, Indonesia. They live a semi-nomadic hunter gatherer lifestyle in the coastal and rainforest environments of the islands. At least 30,000 people of Mentawai Tribe who live isolated from modern community. And now the numbers alwayd decreasing. The people are characterised by their heavy spirituality, body art, and their tendency to sharpen their teeth.
The Mentawai tribe live in the traditional dwelling called the Uma which is a longhouse and is made by weaving bamboo strips together to make walls and thatching the roofs with grass, the floor is raised on stilts and is made of wood planks.
The main clothing for men os a ‘Loin Cloth’. Mentawai adorn themsleves with necklaces and flowers in tehir hair and ears. Women wear a cloth wound around the waist and small sleeveless vests. Mentawai tribe sharpen teeth with a chisel for aesthetic reasons. Tattoing is done with a needle and wood which is hammered on the needle by sharman calles sikerei.
Tattooing on this tribe was an identity and personal or communal reflection of the people’s relationship to the nature, called great subulungan, although there are motivational and design diffrences from region to region and among clans.
Padang is the gateway to the Minang Highlands. With the largest port on Sumatra’s West Coast, this is a merchant town attracting ships trading in goods such as rubber, cinnamon, coffe, tea, cement, and coal. If you take a stroll down to the old colonial waterfront you’ll see century old warehouses stocked with fragrant cinnamon and other spices waiting to be shipped to Jakarta and Singapore.
Air Manis is Padang’s most popular beach, located about one hours walk along the coast or quick trip in a minibus. The legend of the beach says that once a young man named Malin Kundang went out to sea to become a rich merchant. Famous throughout for its distinctive cuisine. Padang is the place to go to sample the famous spicy nasi padang food that has spread throughout the country and the world., includes such delicacies as the spicy coconut surry rendang and soto padang. Experince the unique way Padang food is served. Watch how waitres expertly carry more than ten plates with all kinds of delicacies on both arms. These dishes then be spread out on the table for dinners to pick and choose.
Arrive Padang in the afternoon or early evening. Check-in and dinner in a hotel near Muaro Padang. Before turning in we will have a group briefing for tomorrow’s activity.
Around 6.00 AM, we will leave to Muaro Padang. Boat crossing to Muara Siberut using speed boat Mentawai Fast (Padang-Sikabaluan-Muara Siberut) which takes about 4-5 hours. Lunch will be at Sikabaluan. Once we reach Muara Siberut, we head to the basecamp for preparation and permits.
At 4.00 PM, we will leave to Rorogod/Butuy Village using wooden canoe (2 hours duration). Arrive at the Uma, a traditional house of Mentawai Tribe, where we will spend night for rest and free time.

After breakfast, we will see the making of ‘Kabid’, a traditional cloth from tree bark. After that we will be going back to Uma for lunch and continue with making poisonous arrow session.
Back to Uma and have dinner. Rest and free time.

After breakfast, we will watch the Sikerei (medicine man) dances or watch them practicing the tattoo making. Back for lunch in Uma then continue with making a sago. Join the hunting party in the Jungle with locals and watch the traditional dance performances.

After breakfast, we will be heading back to basecamp in Muara Siberut. Lunch and back to Padang using seedboat Mentawai Fast. Arrive in Muaro Padang at around 6.00 PM. Dinner and go to the airport or check in to hotel in Padang (not included in program, Klayap will help you).
