Tangkahan is combinations of vegetation and topography makes it a marvelous tourist spot rarely found elsewhere. The Batang Serangan and Buluh rivers, converging exactly in this zone, are typical of rainforest streams, with diverse varieties of vegetation and colorful rocks and Sumatra Elephants on their banks. The clear, bluish green river water againts the panoramic view creates a mystical atmosphere. The best season to Visit is June to October.

This village in the incredible Gunung Leuser National Park is located on the junction of two rivers, Batang Serangan and Buluh. The park is one of the world’s most biologically diverse conservation areas, home to some of the planet’s most endangered species.
Effected in the past by logging and poachers, today this reserve has been transformed as an eco-reserve. The local people have acted to turn their situation around and conserve their precious surrounds. Come and meet the elephants who together with the rangers, patrol the forest to keep illegal loggers and poachers out.

Discover the Sumatran jungle and have an outdoor adventure with orangutans at the jungle village of Bukit Lawang. Literally meaning “door to the hills”, BukiT Lawang is a small village situated at the south of the Mount Leuseur National Park.
Bukit Lawang is a gateway to the legendary Sumatran jungle with it’s steep slippery terrain and muddy slopes, exploring the jungle here is a true adventure. Trek through the breathtakingly thick jungle and be transported into to new world.
It is the gentle giants of the jungle, the orangutans, which are the main attraction here. Bukit Lawang is one of the best places in the world to meet this rare and endangered primate. See these graceful creatures swing through the forest canopy as they forage for fruit. This is one of the largest stronghold communities of orangutans, with more than 5000 of them living in the here.
The number of orangutans in the jungle has decreased as a result of hunting, animal trading and a damaged environment. The rehabilitation center helps orangutans regain their natural habits by putting them through intensive training before their release back to the wild. Once a primate heads back the jungle, the rehabilitation center keeps providing it with food supplements and regular check-ups.
Our team will pick you up at Kualanamu International Airport or your Hotel at Medan. After that you will go straight to Tangkahan. Drive from Medan to Tangkahan takes around 5 hours.
You will check in your lodge inn, where rooms have been reserved for you. Accomodations in Tangkahan are basic, built from simple materials to keep in harmony with nature. Electricity run by own generator and not available after 10.00 PM.
After checking in. Rest of the day will be free time. You can walk along the bank of the Buluh River to see thousand beautiful butterflies by the river, explore small waterfall close to the river, or swimming in Buluh river itself.
After breakfast, you will visit the Elephant Camp where you can see the Sumatra Elephant bathing. You can join to wash the elephants. After that you will start trekking with elephants (riding the elephants) for 1 hour exploring part of the Leuser National Park.
At noon you will drive by local transport or Jeep to Bukit Lawang passing through plantations and dense jungle. On the way you will stop by at oil palm, rubber, and cacao plantations. Drive from Tangkahan to Bukit Lawang takes around 2 hours.
Arrive at Bukit Lawang you will check in your lodge, where rooms have been reserved for you. After checking in. Rest of the day will be free time. Visit a local village or swimming on the river.
After breakfast you will visit the Orangutan rehabilitation center to see the Orangutan while being feed and prepared for release back into their natural habitat.
The excursions starts with a short walk along the river bank and crossing the river with rubber boat or traditional canoe. After that you will continue trekking until you reach at the platform where regularly Orangutan being feed twice a day at 8.00 AM and 3.00 PM.
After that you will continue the trip with 6 hours jungle trekking. We will bring you to the excitement of the Sumatra rainforest. Here you have the opportunity to see several species of indigenous flore and fauna.
Once you finished your breakfast, you will checking out and straight go back to Medan. Drive from Bukit Lawang to Medan takes around 5 hours.
