In mid-September 2016, we had clients that engaged us for Discover East Java 6D5N package. In this trip, there was a request from participants to explore the Baluran National Park that was originally not in the schedule, hence, I decided to visit there as a bonus to our clients.
Baluran : Africa Van Java
Baluran National Park is often called as ‘Africa Van Java’ or ‘A Little Africa in Java’. It offers distinctive natural scenic beauty of Africa – an African savannah. Not only the landscape that is scenic, Baluran is also the habitat of various types of wild animals.
I was a little bit pessimist when we visited Baluran that day because I had been there for several times but I hardly to see any animals if we were just to stay there for a while. It is more recommended to stay overnight to get higher chance to see them as we explore the national park area. Therefore, I told our Tour Leader that accompanying the group, to explain to them that whether we could see the animals, that would be based on our luck. I didn’t wish them to have too high expectation.
No doubt, the landscape with African savannah feel, they definitely would get it. Especially it was still summer or dry season. But for the wild animals, I had no confidence.
“Hope that they won’t get disappointed,” I told myself.
But guess what, I have to admit that I was totally wrong! After enjoying the beautiful reddish sunrise emerging from the Bama Sea Coast with the perfect weather, it turned out that we got treats of exciting attraction of various wild animals there. We were so lucky! Starting from a herd of deer and antelope which were grazing on the green pasture that quiet morning, wild buffalo that walked arrogantly passing through the savannah and also some wild buffalos that were soaking in the pool of mud enjoying the morning, a flock of black monkey who was jumping from one tree to another tree, as well as various several species of birds such as some male peacocks with its beautiful feathers, and also hornbills with its beautiful beak.
Recalling our previous clients that went to Baluran and always back to hotel with a little disappointment because they only found few animals there, I would say yes, this group was very lucky! Then I had this silly thought that it will be amazing and also raising the prestige of the National Park, if the government can import a few couple of elephant, giraffe and zebra, also do not forget couple of lions directly from Africa and bred them in this place. Then Baluran will no longer be ‘A little africa in Java’ but ‘A Real Africa in Java’. Ha..ha..ha..
Whatever it is, if you want to see wildlife in Baluran National Park, we suggest you to stay overnight in Baluran. Join the night safari or other outdoor activities in Baluran. Or, if you do not want to spend night in Baluran, do come to Baluran from your hotel in Banyuwangi in early morning to catch the sunrise at Bama Beach then continue with exploring the Bekol Savannah. Most of the wild animals become active either at night or early morning after sunrise. Also, do not forget to come during the dry season to get the typical of African savannah scenery.
